This album is quite old, I think I did it circa 2001 or maybe before, I don’t know. I don’t even know what I think about it right now, so I’m just gonna copy something that I write at that time:

“Sometime ago I decided to read a book by James Joyce entitled Finnegans Wake, a work that is quite strange and doesn’t make any sense. At the same time I was experimenting with several computer softwares that manipulate sound. The results of that experiments were quite meaningless, I was just testing different things with different kinds of sounds. Some of the themes had rhythm or structures more or less defined, another ones were just noise. Then I thought about use sentences of that book to entitle the songs, because both things were quite nonsense.”

It was published by Harzard Records, so it’s in the public domain. You can download it in different formats from Archive.

And, just by chance, today is 130th anniversary of James Joyce‘s birth… His work is now also in the public domain.

During the last years, there have been a lot of legal arguments related with copyright issues. This is nothing new, but with the global adoption of the Internet most ‘cultural’ corporations feel threaten and this has led to increasingly restrictive copyright laws.

There are hundreds of books, paintings, films, etc. that should be in the public domain and they are not for several reasons, usually related with the economic interests of big enterprises. We have also witness ridiculous lawsuits by the heirs of artists who are much more interested in money than in the cultural legacy of their ancestors.

Strategies Against © is a databending game that transfigures all kind of elements related with these issues (works of art, laws, etc.) into sound, images, books or any other kind of ‘artistic’ media and puts them into the public domain.
